Red Hat Senior Specialist Solutions Architect

I’m Stephen Smith, a Senior Specialist Solutions Architect at Red Hat. I help customers in edge industries build solutions on Linux and open source architectures.

Right now most of that is virtual protection, automation and control (vPAC): running a power substation’s protection relays as software on standard servers, following the vPAC Alliance’s vision for software-defined substations. I’m the main author of the automation (ansible-vpac) and the architecture pattern (virtual-protection) in Red Hat’s RedHatEdge GitHub organization.

The other half is RHEL image mode (bootc): the operating system ships as a container image, so every site runs the same tested image, and an update is one reboot with a rollback if it’s ever needed.

Before Red Hat, I was a founding team member of Linux Academy, where I taught Linux, AWS, OpenStack and security, and helped build the teams behind those courses.
